Fantastic finish to the first adventure of 2011!

The trip started early Easter morning and ended the Friday before
Memorial Day. I was able to cover over 7,200 miles over a period of 10
days of riding. I learned a lot and had a blast. Though the trip was
not as extensive as originally planned, it was a great experience! The
ride took me though states that I had never visited and places I have
never seen. Some of the best views of the ride were hours leading up
to the incident on I-10 in El Paso Texas.
The exact cause of the fire is not known, I may never know. It was
great to push the bike to the limit and find that it was my gear and I
that were not up for the task, the Triumph just kept going. After a
major fire in the rear the bike was able to turn around and make the
3,800 mile trip home for repairs under her own power.
I will be forever weary of synthetic fabrics around motorcycles, it
is no less luck that second degree burns was all that I suffered. I
packed items that I never needed but will always be with the bike.
Tire pump, first aid, and 90% of my tools were never needed, however
they have a place on long trips. A fire extinguisher is going to be an
added item for future solo trips.
I will be experimenting with seat covers and modifications to
increase the comfort for trips over 600 miles. The next hitch at home
holds plans for certified Iron Butt on both of my British bikes.
I was able to do the entirety of the trip with old school AAA road
maps and pre writing directions the night before. Though a GPS would
have been nice in some of the cities to aid in exploration, I am still
sold on the befit of just enjoying the ride. I'll get there when I get
there, it really doesn't matter which way I go.
Thanks to everyone who kept up with the blog and who have been more
than patient with my lack of grammar and spelling skills. Keep
checking back, the summer holds many great rides, some short day trips
(Widow Sons) and others much longer and more remote than I have done
before (Trans Labrador).
